Agadir

360 days of sunshine a year...

Agadir’s reputation as a beach resort has spread worldwide...

From Agadir, principal port of the south and Morocco’s premier beach resort, the coast sweeps southwest for 300 km to the little fishing port of Tarfaya. Between these towns are endless beaches, some stunning wild coastlines and prime bird-watching opportunities.
From a cliff-road flanking the hill, the Old Kasbah, dating from the 16th century, overlooks the azure spread of the ocean, the verdant valleys of the Great Souss and the majestic slopes of the Anti-Atlas. Devastated by an earthquake in 1960, the town of Agadir was rebuilt into a neat grid of residential suburbs and tourists complexes. It is an underwhelming modern city but not without its own easy charm. Its sandy shores pull crowds of Europeans during the winter months. Overlooked by mountains and more sheltered than many other Atlantic beaches, Agadir provides some of the safest swimming places in Morocco. Bathed in sunshine the whole year round, the city offers facilities for sailing, wind surfing, horse-riding, tennis, golf and a host of other sports activities.
The Ancienne Talborjt (the old Kasbah) occupies a hill, 7 km to the northwest of the city centre. It is somewhat of a shrine for family and friends of the over 15000 people killed in the earthquake. An inscription from 1746 still adorns the gateway, exhorting visitors to “fear God and honour your King”. It is a long walk up to the Kasbah. From the hill, you will enjoy a panoramic view of the city and the bay.
If you fancy a round of golf…
The Agadir Royal Golf Club is a par 36 course 3,600 meters long with fairways perfumed by pines, eucalyptus and mimosa, fragrances that blend with the tang of the nearby ocean ... It is a delightful course, but you must beware of the trees and the very dense undergrowth. The greens are broad, well defended by deep bunkers and groups of palm trees that close of the angles. The number three hole is particularly challenging, its splendid 469 meters and par 5 requiring particular skill on the second shot, to overcome the impressive water hazard. After the game, players can meet and discuss their round in the panoramic club house, practically buried in a cascade of Bougainville area.
North of Agadir
The first stage of this route runs close to the coast. A series of sandy beaches offer more privacy than the city beach. At Tamri, 35 miles from Agadir, the road veers away from the sea to pass through gently rolling hills planted with argan trees.
South of Agadir
South of Agadir lie some of the most exhilarating landscapes in Morocco. The dramatic Anti-Atlas mountains crowned by mud villages rise to the southeast. Closer to the coast, on the far side of the Oued Massa, is the start of the Sahara Desert. Travelling in the region, you will notice Saharan influences in everything from the style of the women’s dress to the architecture. Until the 1960’s the Saharan tribes were still leading a nomadic life over an area reaching into black Africa.

Perched between the mountainous regions of the Anti-Atlas and the western extreme of the High Atlas, Agadir is a departure point for a variety of marvellous excursions.
